Reflection on Ed Talk Videos

In the Ed talk videos something I constantly saw was you never know what a student is going through at home which can make school harder for them. There was a lot of questions on how would I handle situations in the classroom that can be as a teacher and you may never know when these things can arise. I learned most problems between students should addressed with the student alone so they are not outed to other students with certain problems they could be experiencing. Along with being there for students to give them some advice on who they can talk to help them get through these problems. The biggest thing I took away from these Ed talk videos was I am there to meet them where they are at and get them either to the required level or help them surpass the level what they are at and be there to make school an enjoy able place to be not a place that makes their lives more difficult.

History of Education

As a pre-teacher I found the Veterans Readjustment Benefits Act of 1966, which provides not only education benefits to but also home and farm loans as well as employment counseling and placement services for Vietnam veterans. this act help 385,000 veterans. I found this act interesting because I actually never knew they did this for veterans and thought that they didn’t give them help because of the hate for the war. They didn’t just give them money they gave them resources help them find jobs and helped with education. They also gave them loans to help pay for housing and for farms. I had always thought that the Vietnam veterans got any help when they got state side. This opened my eyes to the fact that even the government had helped support our troops education for those who never finished education due to being drafted.

Reflection 1: Meet Them where they are

What I feel like meeting a student in the middle means is assessing where a student is in their personal situation and most importantly their academic situation. The reason why I feel like it is important to assess their personal situation is because you may not know what their home life is like and that could make school seem like it is not important to them because they see themselves ending up like their parents and I saw this alot at my school. I need to understand how they feel about school to hopefully change their perspective to a positive one. If they do have a stable home life and are successful I need to push them to become better.  One thing my dad always said was if you have the grades you can do anything you want; if that’s going to college or going into the trades. Next is gonna be how they perform academically i need to know where their at to see how much they know to help them either catch up to the adequate level they need to be at or if they are performing at a high level already I need to help them learn more and not get dragged down by other students who aren’t quite there yet. Overall I just need to meet my students where they are at to either help them get caught up or to push them so they become better then when they came into the classroom.
